2006-07 Results During the off-season, General Manager Dave Nonis sent Todd Bertuzzi, Alex Auld, and Bryan Allen to Florida for Roberto Luongo, Lukas Krajicek and a draft pick. He also picked up Willie Mitchell and Taylor Pyatt to help fill holes left from the departure of Ed Jovanovski and Anson Carter. The Canucks also fired coach Marc Crawford and brought in Alain Vigneault to be the bench boss. The season started well, with the Canucks hovering around the .500 mark until Christmas. Then, they went on a tear, earning at least a point in 38 of their final 46 games of the season. They finished with a team record 105 points and finished first in the Northwest Division. The Sedin twins continued to improve, with Daniel leading the team in goals (36) and points (84) and Henrik setting a franchise record for assists in a season (71). Roberto Luongo was amazing in net, playing 76 games, recording 47 wins (both team records) and recording 5 shutouts. Sophomore Kevin Bieksa was a pleasant surprise, leading the blueliners with 42 points and being named the team's best defenseman. The Canucks opened the playoffs against the Dallas Stars. After trading eight goals in the first three periods of the first game, the teams shut each other down defensively. The first game went into quadruple overtime before Henrik Sedin finally ended the marathon. Neither team scored more than two goals in any one game after that. In the seventh game, the Canucks again led 2-1 before scoring two empty net goals to finish the series. In the second round, the Canucks met the Anaheim Ducks. Despite the goaltending heroics of Roberto Luongo, the team continued to struggle offensively. The Canucks were eliminated in five games. |
