1990-91 Results

Bob McCammon coached 54 games in 1990-91 before being fired. Pat Quinn took over behind the bench and, despite a 9-1 loss in his first game, began guiding the Canucks to a better fate. Late in the season, GM Quinn obtained "the blues brothers" (Geoff Courtnall, Cliff Ronning, Sergio Momesso and Robert Dirk) from St. Louis. The new blood rejuvinated the Canucks and led to a late season "turtle-derby" for fourth place with the Winnipeg Jets. Neither team could pull away from the other, until the season came down to the final Canuck game. The Canucks defeated the Jets in overtime to finally clinch a playoff spot.

The Canucks met the Gretzky-led Los Angeles Kings in the first round. A Geoff Courtnall hat-trick in the first game stunned the Kings faithful. Vancouver jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game before the Kings rebounded to win. In the third game Cliff Ronning scored in overtime, then celebrated by riding his stick a la Tiger Williams before being mobbed by his teammates. Unfortunately, this was as close as the Canucks would come. They lost the next three games and the series.
