Vancouver Canucks vs. Atlanta Flames The Atlanta Flames joined the NHL for the 1972-73 season. Right from the beginning, the Canucks had trouble defeating the Flames. By the time the Flames relocated to Calgary after the 1979-80 season, the Canucks had managed 14 wins in 38 tries. The Canucks never met the Atlanta Flames in the playoffs. Historical Notes: Canuck defenseman Pat Quinn was selected by the Flames in their expansion draft and later became their captain ... Don Lever was the first Canuck to score against the Flames ... Gary Smith recorded his first shutout as a Vancouver Canuck against Atlanta (October 23, 1973) ... Gerry O'Flaherty set a team record by scoring two goals in nine seconds (March 15, 1974) ... It was against Atlanta that the Canucks first allowed 12 goals in a single game (March 21, 1975) ... In a major trade, the Canucks sent Don Lever and Brad Smith to the Flames for Ivan Boldirev and Darcy Rota ... Stan Smyl recorded his first hat trick in a 9-3 loss to Atlanta (March 7, 1980) ... Tiger Williams was the last Canuck to score against the Flames. |
