Drafts & Deals

The NHL Amateur Draft began in 1963 as a way for the six NHL clubs to divide up the few quality amateur players who weren't already the property of one of the teams. When the Vancouver Canucks and Buffalo Sabres joined the NHL in 1970, the league used a spinning wheel to determine which team would receive the first overall pick. The Canucks lost the spin, Buffalo got Gilbert Perreault and the Canucks were stuck with Dale Tallon. When the NHL "expanded" to four WHA cities in 1979, the "Amateur Draft" became the "Entry Draft" since many of the players selected had turned professional with the WHA already.

Surprisingly, the Canucks have never picked first overall (although they did briefly own the first overall pick in 1999). They have picked second overall four times, third overall four times and fourth overall four times. Six times in their history the Canucks have traded away their first round pick and it cost them Cam Connor (Montreal, 1974), David Shand (Atlanta, 1976), Glen Wesley (Boston, 1987), Pavel Vorobiev (Chicago, 2000), Boyd Gordon (New York Islanders, 2002) and Quinton Howden (Florida, 2010).

RD: Draft Round -- each team in the NHL gets one pick per round based on where they finished in the standings (the exact formula for who picks where has changed slightly through the years). Obviously, when there were fewer teams in the NHL, the Canucks would draft more frequently. When draft picks are traded, it is possible to have more than one pick -- or no picks -- in a given round.
PICK: Just a count of how many players the Canucks picked that year.
OVER: The overall (league wide) pick number.
TEAM: When the pick was traded away or obtained from another team, this code represents which team held the draft pick (if the column is blank, the Canucks picked in their own spot). These are the standard Team Codes that I use on this site.
PLAYER OBTAINED/COMMENTS: Players listed in CAPITAL LETTERS actually played for the Canucks.

(com) - Compensatory Pick: Beginning in 1996, teams were awarded draft picks as compensation for things like free agent signings. These picks are inserted in the middle of the draft in addition to the regular draft picks.
