After the amazing Stanley Cup run the year before, the Canucks looked to continue their winning ways. There were a few changes in the off-season, so the team would again be led by forwards Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Alex Burrows, Ryan Kesler, Chris Higgins and Jannik Hansen, defensemen Alex Edler, Kevin Bieksa, Dan Hamhuis and the goaltending tandem of Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider.

The Canucks started with a mediocre 9-9-1 record through their first 19 games before nine wins in ten games put them back near the top of the standings. From January 17 to February 19, the team recorded at least a point in thirteen straight games. On March 21, Daniel Sedin suffered a concussion and missed the rest of the regular season. The Canucks then went on a seven game winning streak and finished the year with a win over Edmonton giving them 111 points and their second President's Trophy in as many years.

Once again, the Canucks had home ice advantage for the playoffs and met the Los Angeles Kings in the first round. After two 4-2 losses in Vancouver, the Canucks started Cory Schneider in net for the rest of the series. After a 1-0 loss in Los Angeles and facing elimination in a sweep, Daniel Sedin returned to the lineup and the Canucks won 3-1. Back in Vancouver, the Kings took the series with an overtime goal and then went on to win the Stanley Cup.
