2010-11 Results The 2010-11 season was the most successful season in team history. During the off-season, the Canucks picked up some solid players like Dan Hamhuis, Manny Malhotra, and Raffi Torres. These players complemented the veteran core of Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Ryan Kesler, Alex Burrows, Kevin Bieksa, Christian Ehrhoff and Roberto Luongo. Younger players like Mason Raymond, Jannik Hansen and Cory Schneider were also expected to contribute to the success of the team. The Canucks started the season slowly, going 2-3-2 in their first seven games before winning eight of their next nine games. Starting with a win on December 8, the Canucks put together a streak where they earned at least a point in 17 consecutive games, including an eight game winning streak (the second longest in team history). After 42 games, they sported a record of 28-8-6 and were in first place in the NHL. The Canucks also had a six game winning streak starting on January 24 and a seven game winning streak starting on March 5. By the time they defeated Calgary on April 9, their 117 points earned them the President's Trophy for the first time in team history. Daniel Sedin finished the season with 104 points and he was awarded the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer. The Canucks finished the season with the fewest goals against, so Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider shared the William Jennings Trophy. Later in the spring, Ryan Kesler won the Frank Selke Trophy as the league's best defensive forward, Daniel Sedin won the Ted Lindsay award as the league MVP (as chosen by the players), and Mike Gillis was named the league's General Manager of the Year. Both Daniel Sedin (Left Wing) and Henrik Sedin (Centre) were named to the NHL's first all-star team. For the third straight season, the Canucks met the Chicago Blackhawks in the opening round of the playoffs. The Canucks won the first three games, but the Hawks won the next three. In game seven, Alex Burrows scored in the first period and then again in overtime to allow the Canucks to escape to the next round. Ryan Kesler dominated the second round series against the Nashville Predators. He scored five goals and recorded assists even though the Canucks only scored 14 goals. In the Conference Finals, Canucks won two games at home and then split the two games in San Jose. In game five, Luongo made 54 saves over four and a half periods before Kevin Bieksa took advantage of a lucky bounce to score the series winning goal in double overtime. For the first time in their history the Canucks had home ice advantage in the finals. After winning the first two games, each by a single goal, game three started as another tight game. The Bruins responded to a late Aaron Rome hit that injured Nathan Horton with an 8-1 blowout. After a 4-0 loss, Luongo was excellent in another 1-0 shutout in Vancouver. Facing elimination, the Bruins won 5-2 at home and then took game seven and the Stanley Cup on the road. |
