Once again, Pat Quinn removed himself from the coaching duties and hired Tom Renney to be the bench boss. Renney seemed to be good at getting the most out of fringe players but had a tough time getting the superstars to buy into his system. Martin Gelinas had a career year, scoring 35 goals and being named the team's MVP. Alexander Mogilny recorded only 73 points while Pavel Bure battled nagging injuries all season, before finally finishing with 55 points. The Canucks just missed the playoffs, for the first time in seven seasons.
