1993-94 Results

After the two previous seasons, the common refrain was "sure, the Canucks have proved that they can do it in the regular season, but it's the playoffs that count". They started the 1993-94 season with an impressive 7-1-0 record, but finished the season only one game above .500. Pavel Bure scored another 60 goals, Geoff Courtnall, Cliff Ronning, Trevor Linden, Kirk McLean, Gino Odjick, Jyrki Lumme, Dana Murzyn and others had good seasons, but it seemed that the team was focusing on just making the playoffs. The Canucks finished seventh in the newly named Western Conference and met up with the Calgary Flames in the first round (again). After falling behind three games to one, the Canucks won the next three games in overtime to take the series. Geoff Courtnall, Trevor Linden and Pavel Bure scored the overtime markers.

In the second round, the Canucks polished off the rested -- and possibly rusty -- Dallas Stars in five games. In the Conference Finals, the Canucks met up with the Toronto Maple Leafs. After losing the first game in overtime, the Canucks won the next four games, including two straight shutouts by Kirk McLean (he recorded four in the playoffs that spring). Game five of the series took just over four periods to decide when Greg Adams scored the series ending goal.

For the second time in their history, the Canucks were in the Stanley Cup finals, but this time many believed that they could actually win it all. The Canucks travelled to New York to take on the Rangers and Greg Adams was the hero scoring another overtime goal (the team's sixth of the post-season). The Canucks lost the next three games, setting up game five in New York. Ranger fans were already celebrating their Stanley Cup Championship when the Canucks came up with a 6-3 victory. Game six in Vancouver will probably go down as the most exciting NHL game ever played in Vancouver. The Canucks won that one as well, forcing game seven in New York. As time ran down, a desperate Adam Graves tried to eliminate Vancouver's leader Trevor Linden by smashing his stick into Linden's head -- a play that went undetected by on-ice and league officials. Trevor Linden, not quite needing crutches, scored twice in game seven, but it was not enough.
