Pat Quinn wasted little time in making changes. Tom Watt was gone as head coach, replaced by Bob McCammon. The Canucks outbid many teams, signing Ian Kidd and proving that the Canucks were willing to spend money to build a contender. Patrik Sundstrom was sent to New Jersey for Greg Adams and an unproven netminder named Kirk McLean. McLean played so well that season that the Canucks sent Richard Brodeur packing (much to the dismay of many loyal King Richard fans). Despite some obvious improvements in the team, the Canucks still finished second last in the NHL.
