1983-84 Results

Roger Neilson, the genius who guided the Canucks to the 1982 Stanley Cup finals became the victim of the Canucks poor performance in 1983-84. He was fired 48 games into the season after failing to inspire the team to the heights they had acheived earlier. General Manager Harry Neale stepped in behind the bench and guided the Canucks to another third place finish in the Smythe Division. Patrik Sundstrom set a team record, recording 91 points, while Tony Tanti also set a team record, scoring 45 goals.

For the third straight season, the Canucks opened the playoffs against the Calgary Flames. After losing the first two games on the road, the Canucks came home and hammered the Flames 7-0. In that game, Doug Halward became the first Canuck to record a hat-trick in the playoffs and remains the only Canuck blueliner to accomplish that feat. Richard Brodeur became the first Canuck netminder to record a shutout in the playoffs. The buzz was short-lived as the Flames won the game and the series the following night.
