Vancouver Canucks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins entered the NHL for the 1967-68 season. Both teams have had similar cycles: mediocre in the 1970s, bad in the 1980s, good in the 1990s. Since 2000, the Canucks have won most of the rare encounters between these teams. The Canucks and Penguins have never met in the playoffs.

Historical Notes: Wayne Maki was the first Canuck to score against the Penguins ... Rick Blight scored four goals against Pittsburgh on opening night in 1976 ... The Canucks set a team record by scoring four goals in 83 seconds against the Penguins (November 26, 1980) ... The Canucks hit double digits against the Penguins on December 19, 1980, winning 10-4 ... Patrik Sundstrom set team records for assists and points in a game when he scored a goal and added six assists for seven points against Pittsburgh (February 29, 1984) ... Kirk McLean recorded his first NHL shutout in a 5-0 win over the Penguins (February 17, 1988) ... In a major trade, the Canucks sent Tony Tanti, Barry Pederson, and Rod Buskas to the Penguins for Dave Capuano, Andrew McBain and Dan Quinn (January 8, 1990) ... Markus Naslund scored four goals, including the overtime winner, in a 4-3 victory over the Penguins (December 9, 2003) ... The Canucks and Penguins did not meet in 2006-07.
