Vancouver Canucks vs. Chicago Blackhawks The Chicago Blackhawks were one of the "original six" teams when the Canucks joined the NHL in 1970-71. Back then, they were officially the "Black Hawks" and were very difficult for the Canucks to beat. Between 1974-75 and 1980-81, the two teams were in the Smythe Division together. Since then, the teams have been fairly evenly matched. The Canucks and Blackhawks have met in the playoffs five times, with Vancouver winning two of the series. Historical Notes: Murray Hall was the first Canuck to score against the Black Hawks ... In one of the biggest deals the Canucks made early in their history, Dale Tallon was sent to Chicago for Gary Smith and Jerry Korab ... Glen Hanlon recorded his first NHL shutout against the Hawks (November 1, 1978) ... "Towel Power" was born in Chicago when Canuck coach Roger Neilson surrendered to referee Bob Myers in the 1982 playoffs ... One of the longest games in Canuck history took 88 minutes, 58 seconds and was ended when Canuck Jim Nill scored against Tony Esposito (April 27, 1982) ... Ed Olczyk scored an empty net goal four seconds after Stan Smyl pulled the Canucks to within a goal, setting the Canuck team record for fastest two goals by both teams (March 17, 1985) ... On January 5, 2006, the Canucks were awarded two penalty shots in a game against Chicago. They scored on one of their two shots in a 3-2 win. |
