Gordie's Guys
It is a rare player that
is gifted offensively and can also pack a punch. Gordie
Howe played hockey in an era (actually several eras) where
every player was expected to be able to defend themselves
when needed. In his honour, the term "Gordie Howe
Hat Trick" refers to a player that scores a goal,
records an assist and gets into a fight in a single game.
Records show that he only accomplished this feat twice in
his career.
Many Canucks have
accomplished the feat and they are listed below. No
Canuck recorded a Gordie Howe Hat Trick during the
2015-16 season.
Records
First Gordie Howe
Hat Trick:
November 11, 1970 - Pat Quinn (1 goal in first
period, 1 assist in second period, fought Ron Schock in

First Game with
two Canuck Gordie Howe Hat Tricks:
March 25, 1973 - Bobby Schmautz (1 goal, 1 assist, fought
John Grisdale) and Barry Wilkins (1 goal, 1 assist,
fought Garry Monahan) during 7-4 win over Toronto
First Playoff
Gordie Howe Hat Trick:
April 10, 1983 - Mark Kirton (1 goal, 1 assist, fought
Doug Risebrough) during a 4-3 loss to Calgary.

Notes
My database
does not include the reason for penalties, just the time
served. Instead of looking for fighting penalties, this
report includes "coincidental majors". The
players listed above have a major penalty at the same
time as an opponent also took a major penalty. It is
possible that this was not a fight. For example a player
could take a boarding major and then other players could
be involved in a fight at the same stoppage in play.
Stats and records up to
the end of the 2015-16 season.
