First Game
Back
Experts often remind us
that the Canucks always struggle in their first game at
home after a road trip. The facts, however, tell a
different story. In their first eight seasons in the NHL,
the Canucks actually performed better in their first game
back from a road trip than in other games during a
homestand. During the 1980's, the Canucks did struggle a
bit in their first game back, but they didn't do much
better in other home games. In recent seasons, the
Canucks often do better in their first game after a road
trip.
Up to 2015-16, the Canucks
have done better after a road trip in 27 of those
seasons. In 17 seasons, the Canucks performed better if
the previous game was at home. In one case (1993-94), the
records were identical. Overall, however, their record
after a road trip is very similar to their record when
the previous game was at home.

Column Headings
Length
of Road Trip (Games): Winning percentage in
first game back after a road trip of the specified length
of games
Road/Home: Overall winning percentage in
the first game back after a road trip (of any length)
Home/Home: Winning percentage in home
games preceded by another home game.
Notes
All stats are for regular season games only.
These stats use the NHL standard winning percentage, not
the adjusted winning percentage seen on other pages of
this site.
A winning percentage of .000
means the Canucks did not earn any points in that
situation. For example, the Canucks went on three
one-game road trips in 2003-04 and lost every game at
home following those trips. A winning percentage of --
means the Canucks did not play any games in that
situation. For example, the Canucks did not take any
one-game road trips in 2008-09.
