Answer to bonus question: The Canucks were huge underdogs going into the 1989 playoffs. After all, they finished 43 points behind the league leading Flames.

In the opening game, Paul Reinhart scored in overtime sending the Saddledome crowd home stunned. The Flames won the next two easily. In game four, the Canucks were led by rookie Trevor Linden, who recorded four points in a 5-3 win. After the Canucks lost game five in Calgary, they returned home facing a do-or-die situation.

Trailing 2-1 late in the second period, the Canucks exploded for three goals in just over two minutes. They went into the dressing room up 4-2 and eventually prevailed 5-3. Game seven in Calgary also required overtime, but this time the Flames scored a controversial goal that ended the series. After the Flames went on to win the Stanley Cup, it was generally acknowledged that their toughest challenge came at the hands of the Canucks.
