As the Canucks continued their rebuilding efforts, several deals were made in the off-season. Popular netminder Eddie Lack was traded for two draft picks, while ten-year veteran defenseman Kevin Bieksa was dealt to Anaheim for another draft pick. Also leaving the team were Zack Kassian and Nick Bonino. Joining the team were Brandon Sutter, Emerson Etem and Matt Bartkowski.

The season started promising with the Canucks going 3-0-1 in their first four games. However, by mid-December the Canuck record of 11-14-8 put them in danger of finishing last in the division yet within two points of a playoff spot. Over the next fifteen games, the team put together a solid run of 9-3-3 but then spent the rest of the season sliding out of contention. They finished with the third worst record in the league.

On December 9, defenseman Dan Hamhuis had a slapshot deflect into his jaw causing a frightening injury. Just returning to play on February 6th was an accomplishment. One of the few highlights of the season came on January 21 when Daniel Sedin scored two goals in a 4-2 win in Boston. They were his 347th and 348th goals as a Canuck, passing Markus Naslund's record for career goals.
