Following their first round sweep in the 2013 playoffs, the Canucks made two significant changes. The first was the hiring of John Tortorella as their new head coach. The second was dealing with their goaltending issues. However, instead of the expected trade of Roberto Luongo, the Canucks sent Cory Schneider to the Devils for a first round draft pick. During the off-season, the team also picked up a few free agents like Brad Richardson and Mike Santorelli.

For a change, the team started off well posting a record of 9-5-1 through October, then had a mediocre November finishing the month at 13-10-5. In December, they had a seven game winning streak and recorded 22 points in 13 games. With the Canucks struggling in January, the Canucks faced the Calgary Flames on the 18th. Two seconds into the game, a line brawl broke out that saw several players tossed including Kellan Lain, playing his first NHL game. Coach John Tortorella was suspended for attempting to get into the Flames dressing room. Over the next 15 games, the Canucks posted a record of 3-11-1.

On March 2, the Canucks hosted a "Heritage Classic" game at BC Place. Although it was considered an outdoor game, the roof was closed. Eddie Lack got the start in net and two days later Roberto Luongo was traded to Florida. As the season came to an end, the Canucks missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008. As a result, General Manager Mike Gillis and Coach John Tortorella lost their jobs.
